A couple years ago Danner made a special release of their Tanicus boot in support of the release of No Time To Die, Daniel Craig’s final film as James Bond. I grabbed two pair because I love good quality boots and I’m a huge James Bond fan.
I immediately opened one pair, re-laced them to the AR670-1 standard, and began wearing them. They were light, comfortable, and good looking. Suede black combat boots are, unfortunately, not that common. Even this particular model from Danner doesn’t typically come in black. They are made to the standards of the military and are AR670-1 approved coyote tan, so these being black really were a special release.
The boots are fantastic, as anyone who has ever owned a pair of Danner boots will likely expect. The soul is grippy and remains so through the duration of its life. They are light weight at 39 ounces for the pair, and they break in nicely. I got my first pair in 2021 and am still wearing them fairly regularly today. I wore them when I was a patrol cop, I wore them when I was doing security work, I wear them when I’m out on the farm. They’re great boots.
I recently got an email from Danner announcing they had found some back stock of the 60th Anniversary Edition 007 Tanicus boots. I checked the website and found that they had my size available, so I ordered a pair. When they arrived, like before, I re-laced them and gave them a look over. I realized very quickly that these were not the exact same as the 2021 No Time to Die boots.
There are actually 3 different versions of the military Tanicus boot: The Side-Zip, the “Danner Dry“, and what I will refer to as the “Hot Weather” model. The 2021 model of the Bond boot was a black version of the “Hot Weather” model. The 60th Anniversary Bond Boot was based on the “Danner Dry” model. The 60th anniversary edition also has the “007” logo stamped on the inside of the heels. The addition of GoreTex lining and removal of the inside vents also make them very apparently not the same. They are slightly heavier, but they are every bit as comfortable as the 2021 version. I haven’t had them more than a couple days, so I won’t form an opinion on them yet, but so far they seem a good replacement for my worn 2021 boots.
I wanted to share this just in case there is anyone who was unable to get a pair of the originals and grabbed a pair of the anniversary boots. While they may look similar enough, the screen used boots were replicated exactly in the 2021 model. When Bond steps out of the pool in Saffin’s garden you can clearly see the vent holes in his boots. Unfortunately, the anniversary edition boots are not screen accurate for those who care about such things. On the bright side, they have a GoreTex lining and wet winter weather is right around the corner, so this year my feet are sure to stay nice and dry.
Stay safe out there. Head down, chin up, eyes open.
